Are there certain activities that you always think about trying but never actually take the time to do? This year, I encourage you to make space for new things every single week. Below I’ve rounded up some family-friendly ideas that are simple, easy on the pocket, and fun. Savor the alone time or make it social by inviting a friend or family member to join in.
1. Visit a museum or gallery
Whether it’s a local museum with a new exhibition, or one you’ve never been to before, expand your horizons with art this week. Build time into your afternoon lunch break, or your weekend travel plans.
2. Challenge your mind
Do something that makes you think. Sign up for an online course, or start working on a difficult puzzle in your spare time at home. Feeling social? Join a team trivia night with friends or try an escape room – they are popping up everywhere!
3. Experience a new type of cuisine
Get out of your comfort food zone, and try some new flavors. There are many exotic foods from different cultures to choose from — do some research, pick one, and take the family or invite friends. (I personally want to try Peruvian cuisine!)
4. Get lost in a book
Yes, they still exist! Find a good book and make an afternoon or night of it. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), snuggle up in your favorite blanket and get lost in a good story. Not sure which book to try? Sign up for a subscription service, such as Book of the Month.
5. Start a gratitude journal
Find a beautiful journal, put it on your nightstand and write what you are grateful for either daily or weekly. This will improve your mood and outlook on life, as well as your interactions with others on a daily basis.
6. Learn a new workout
From aerial yoga to kickboxing, there are tons of new workouts popping up that are both fun and intense. Get your sweat on and burn some calories — all while learning something new!
7. Take a self-love day
Everyone needs a little me time. Set aside a day to take care of yourself. Whatever you have been putting on the back burner, whether it’s a manicure or taking a long hike outdoors, take this day to indulge in something that makes you feel good.
