In honor of our newest collection, we’re celebrating dancers who inspire us! Meet Akira Armstrong, a trained dancer who couldn’t get representation “because of her size”. Since then, she’s become a viral celebrity for starting Pretty Big Movement, a dance troupe that tours globally. Also, she’s danced with Beyonce.
Where are you from?
AA: I’m from Bronx, NY
How did you get started in dance? What other physical activities do you enjoy?
AA: I started dancing at the age of 8. I begged my mother to put me in dance school so I could learn all genres of dance. Other physical activities I do is workout as often as I can and teach dance classes to the youth.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome on your dance journey?
AA: The biggest challenge I’ve overcome as a dancer is accepting rejection. I’ve built up some thick skin over the years and I’ve realized to never take anything too personal. This is the business I choose as my career and unfortunately being told “NO” is part of the program.
What’s your FAVORITE song to dance to right now?
AA: My favorite song to dance too right now is Janet Jackson “Made for Now.” It pretty much constitutes to my life. As a full-figured dancer the song is in alignment to what I represent. Plus size is on the rise and we are truly “Made for Now.”
What advice would you give to the 13 year old you?
AA: The advice that I would give my 13yr old self is trust the process. Believe in yourself. Remember your purpose and do what fulfills you.
What’s your ultimate favorite dessert?
AA: My ultimate favorite dessert is chocolate chip and cookie dough ice cream
What are you most looking forward to in your future?
AA: What I am most excited about in my future is a Pretty BIG Movement tour. Traveling and performing around the world. Opening up a dance studio and expanding my brand globally.
What makes you feel your best?
AA: What makes me feel my best is when I am able to bring back positive feedback to the ladies in my company. Whether it’s a event that we booked down to completing a task that was challenging for all of us.
What’s your favorite Beyond Yoga piece you wore today?
AA: My favorite piece I wore today was my sweater dress.
What is your secret goal?
AA: My secret goal is to constantly grow as an artist. Learning new things and building positive relationships.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not dancing?
AA: My favorite thing to do when I’m not dancing is relaxing at home doing absolutely nothing.
What inspires you?
AA: What inspires me is great music, meeting new people,watching old music videos and movies.
