Summertime isn’t all about the beach. For many, “the lake” is the beloved summertime location. Whiling away hours on a pontoon boat, getting your adrenaline going with some water skiing or simply hanging out on the dock make these bodies of water quite enticing. Luckily for lake lovers, there are countless locations across the U.S. to get your fix. Here are five of our favorites:
1. Holland, Michigan: Lake Michigan
Experience the sand known as “the singing sands” (thanks to its squeaky sound) and enjoy sunbathing, boating and, of course, hard-to-beat Lake Michigan sunsets.
2. Lake Placid, New York: Mirror Lake
This upstate New York town is ideal for lake lovers looking to avoid high temps. With summertime averages in the high 70s, outdoor activities in this part of the country are nice and comfortable, whether you’re hiking the Adirondacks or boating on Mirror Lake.
3. Lake Havasu City, Arizona: Lake Havasu
Known as one of the country’s top party lakes, this spot is for the social butterflies out there. With lake activities for all ages to enjoy plus nearby casinos, Lake Havasu is a great pick for those looking for a livelier lake experience.
4. Chelan, Washington: Lake Chelan
Boasting an average of 300 days of sunshine, Chelan is an enticing spot for Seattle residents who are looking from an escape from drizzly weather conditions. Bonus: It’s located in one of Washington’s newest wine regions, so when you’re done sunbathing or parasailing you can enjoy some local vino.
5. Elmore, Vermont: Lake Elmore
This town, which calls itself “The Beauty Spot of Vermont” (for good reason), lets visitors experience lovely Lake Elmore while also getting a more standard New England B&B experience. Fill your time in Elmore with canoe trips around the lake, meandering walks along the Mountain Brook Nature Trail and, of course, lots of delicious breakfasts.
