[endimages]Anastasia Soare, the beauty maven behind Anastasia Beverly Hills, is notorious as an eyebrow expert. She’s even been recruited by a long list of celebrity clientele, including (OMG!) Oprah. And with an array of successful salons, a stunning cosmetics line and a luxury lifestyle blog, the female entrepreneur continues to inspire us – beyond the brow. I chatted with Anastasia about the early stages of her brand, what makes a women beautiful and, of course, the art of eyebrow shaping.
How did you get into the world of beauty professionally?
My parents owned a clothing atelier in Romania, so I grew up around beauty and fashion. My mother worked full time, and on Sundays (her only day off), she would take me with her to the beauty salon as a way of spending time with me while she’d have her hair, nails, and facials done. I remember being a little girl feeling so mesmerized by all the products and glamour. Later, after studying art and architecture, I decided to go to beauty school. I had an opportunity to move to America, and since I didn’t speak any English, I figured that having a license as an esthetician would help me land a job somewhere! It worked! I got a job in a Beverly Hills salon soon after we moved. And, that’s how it began.
As a successful female entrepreneur, what advice do you have for women who are starting their own businesses?
Have a clear vision, do all your homework, and never give up. Running a successful business isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay! It takes a lot of work and commitment, so you have to know what you’re getting into and put in the time. I still work around the clock, but I love it. And that’s my other tip: Find something you love to do. Then it will never feel like a job.
Who inspires you?
All the women in my life—from my mother to my daughter to my friends and clients. I’m constantly surrounded by energetic, smart, hard-working women who are doing so many exciting things with their lives. They keep me inspired and motivated.
In your opinion, what makes a woman beautiful?
Great brows, a great smile, and a beautiful, kind heart.
What do you consider the most important part of one’s beauty regimen?
Taking care of one’s skin is obviously very important. It should always be protected from the sun and hydrated. I’m actually working on my skincare line right now, and it will feature a lot of natural ingredients used in Eastern Europe. And, of course, a great pair of brows is essential because the right shape brings all your other features into focus. If eyes are the windows to your soul, then brows are the window treatments that invite you in.
Speaking of brows, any words of wisdom for women out there who don’t currently love their brow shape?
Don’t give up! Brows can be a work in progress. With just a few products, you can help make them look fuller, thicker, darker, and perfectly arched while you wait for them to grow in. Just like the hair on your head, brows can grow back and be reshaped over time. Watch my videos to see how.
What went through your mind the first time you got called to work with Oprah?
It was pretty surreal. When I first moved to America, I didn’t speak English, and I used to watch The Oprah Show every day to help myself learn the language. Eventually, I began imagining myself on her show. Back then, I didn’t know how or why, but it was a dream I had. When I actually met Oprah, I had to pinch myself. But now she has become a dear friend to me… she’s incredibly inspiring!
What beauty product or accessory is always in your purse?
My Precision Tweezers, Brow Wiz, and Liquid Lipsticks, plus a pair of earrings or two so I can easily switch up my look from day-to-night. Check my lifestyle blog, Beyond the Brow, for more peeks inside my bag.
What is more important to you today than it was 10 years ago?
Finding balance in my life. Ten years ago, I was working so hard to build this brand into what it has become. Now, I’m fortunate to be able to pick and choose a little more, and do only what I want to do. I’ve stopped doing brows and instead am focusing on product development and other aspects of the business and my personal life.
