When Olive & June first opened its doors in Beverly Hills three years ago, the city had never seen such a thoughtfully-curated neighborhood nail salon. Today, with two more locations to boot, the boutique nail spa has become an LA staple for the mani/pedi obsessed looking for unique nail art in an effortlessly-chic environment. We caught up with the woman behind the brilliance, Olive & June founder Sarah Gibson Tuttle, to learn more about how she launched her dream job.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING 5-7 YEARS AGO BEFORE OLIVE & JUNE?
SGT: Working in finance in New York. Really cold most of the year and a little bored in my work life!
IS OLIVE & JUNE YOUR DREAM JOB?
SGT: It really is. I love being surrounded by creative, hard working women who inspire me daily.
WHEN DID YOU HAVE YOUR “AH HA” MOMENT OF OLIVE & JUNE?
SGT: While on vacation with my (now) husband, I had that moment of: Wait! I have the BEST idea!
HOW DID YOU COME UP WIH THIS CONCEPT AND DID YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN IT PRIOR?
SGT: I was truly inspired by other businesses in the affordable luxury category (Drybar, Soul Cycle, Urth Caffe, Sugarfish to name a few…) and felt like nails really didn’t have a voice in that space. I had been a mani/pedi consumer for over 15 years, but no professional experience in beauty before Olive & June.
HOW DID YOU FUND YOUR START UP?
SGT: With my savings from finance.
NAME 3 OF THE SCARIEST MOMENTS YOU HAD WHEN DOING THIS.
SGT: It’s always scariest at the beginning, when you aren’t sure about anything. The experiences get less scary as time goes on and you get up the learning curve. The scariest moment was the first day, when everything was running behind, manicurists were mad about any number of things I was failing at (basically everything!) and my adrenaline was pumping. But I just was so determined to make it right, by everyone involved, that I kept putting one foot in front of the other.
WHAT IS YOUR PIECE OF ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO STOP WHAT THEY’RE DOING AND CREATE THEIR “DREAM JOB”?
SGT: DO. IT. There is nothing more rewarding and exciting!
