In today’s society, we’re often so worried about everyone else that we end up treating others better than we do ourselves. Whether you’re married, single, or in a relationship, make sure to show your self some love, too.
Self-love is very important because it shapes our mental, emotional, and even physical state on a daily basis. When you don’t love yourself, you’re less confident and less positive, which affects how you move throughout your day and interact with others. Boosting your self-love improves your overall health; when you feel good about yourself, you want to take care of yourself.
Here are some ways to start loving yourself:
Step 1: Mental Self Love
1. Lighten up on your perception of yourself.
Instead of concentrating on all of the negatives, weaknesses or things you can’t do, put more emphasis on your positives, strengths and the things that you are good at.
2. Give yourself realistic goals.
Don’t pack too many “to-do’s” into one day. Be realistic about what you can accomplish in a certain amount of time. If your goals are more attainable that means you can accomplish them, which means less stress and more happiness!
3. Schedule time for yourself.
Make time for a hobby or leisure activity you love to do. This will take your mind off of the day-to-day responsibilities, and allow you to actually enjoy what you are doing without undue pressure.
Step 2. Emotional Self Love
1. Be present.
Use meditation to help calm those active thoughts and get in tune with yourself. Focus on sitting, breathing, and being present. This regular routine will evoke emotional-centeredness in your daily life.
2. Change how you feel about your mistakes.
None of us have the answer all of the time. Life is all about trial and error, so when you make a mistake, look at it as a learning experience. Remember, you wouldn’t have learned had “this” not happened.
3. Only surround yourself with people who make you feel good.
If you feel uneasy with someone, recognize that and give yourself a healthier environment for your emotions. Your time is precious, so spend more time with the people who deserve it.
Step 3: Physical Self Love
1. Treat yourself to a spa day.
Do something for your physical self that feels like a treat. Whether it’s a manicure, facial, massage or a soak in a hot bath, pamper yourself.
2. Get outside and get moving.
Get those endorphins going by staying active. Take your favorite workout class, go for a walk or hike outside and soak up nature!
3. Make sleep a priority.
Put more emphasis on healthy sleep patterns. Remember, this is the only time your body has to rejuvenate! We put so much “wear & tear” on our bodies, let’s give them the time they need to recuperate.
