More than 70% of the 85 million pet owners in the U.S. have dogs, and many of those owners like to spend as much quality time with their pooches as possible. Whether it’s having convenient access to great dog parks, easily walkable streets, or dog-friendly restaurants and stores, it’s definitely a plus when Fido is made welcome citywide.
That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of the six most dog-friendly cities in the U.S. according to data analyzed by SmartAsset. (Unfortunately, this list doesn’t align with the country’s five most affordable cities. That said, anything for your pup, right?)
6. Chicago, Illinois
The Windy City isn’t known for its temperate year-round weather, but the city makes up for its frigid winter temps by offering many walkable streets and routes as well as 555 dog-friendly restaurants and even a handful of dog-friendly shopping centers.
5. San Diego, California
If your pup loves going out to brunch as much as you do, this is the city for you. San Diego has the second-most dog-friendly restaurants in the nation. Plus, it boasts beautiful year-round weather to make it pleasant to spend time outside with your BFF any time of year.
4. San Francisco, California
As the third most walkable city in the U.S., San Fran makes it easy to be a dog owner. (Oh, and the city also offers tons of dog parks: 3.7 per 100,000 residents, to be more specific.)
3. Las Vegas, Nevada
No need to take a gamble on owning a dog in this town. Vegas is the place to be if you have a pup! It only rains two weeks out of the year, so your dog will have lots of sunshine to enjoy. The city also has dog parks galore!
2. Albuquerque, New Mexico
Get ready to glue your dog to your hip in this city! It boasts tons of dog-friendly restaurant and shopping options, not to mention dog parks (and beautiful weather to enjoy said parks).
1. Tucson, Arizona
Welcome to the most dog-friendly town in America! It rarely rains there – a big plus for dog owners who like to be outside with their pups – and it includes lots of dog-friendly eating and retail options. Plus, this city’s cost of living is actually pretty affordable (leaving you more to spend on man’s best friend!).
