For the launch of new colors in our Mommy and Me collection, we’re celebrating motherhood. Since motherhood is a unique journey for every mama, we’re listening to diverse stories from our community. We got to chat with Valerie Metz, content creator and podcast host based in Costa Mesa, California, about style and what motherhood has been like so far.
What's something you've learned about yourself since becoming a mother that you love?Â
I love that becoming a mother has taught me to enjoy the little things! I struggled with intention and being present before having kids. I value alone time with my husband and quality time with friends so much more now! Self-care looks different since becoming a mom as well so I’m grateful to practice gratitude and intention in those moments.Â
Â
What’s the hardest part about being a mother? Maybe something you weren’t expecting? Â
Always feeling like I’m not doing enough—I am constantly struggling with the balance of getting tasks done, being present with the kids, giving myself quiet time, prioritizing time with my husband, and teaching my kids to be independent but also treasuring time with them. It’s very easy to struggle with not doing enough—especially during busy seasons and in periods of regression in my kids. Â
What's one thing your kid(s) have taught you about yourself?Â
They’ve taught me that I’m actually an introvert! Haha—I always thought I was an extrovert because I’m good with people and love connecting with others, but I definitely recharge alone in silence.Â
Â
What's one piece (or pieces) of your identity that you love that's separate from being a mom?Â
I love this question because I think it’s so healthy for moms to know their identity and purpose outside of motherhood. I love that a huge part of me is creative. Feeding my inner artist through photography and style gives me purpose in my own life!Â
What's one thing you want to teach your kid(s) about their relationship with themselves?Â
I would love for them to feel connected to two things: their creative outlet and their culture. Looking back at when I was a child, I can see that I already had a creative desire in me; I hope I can encourage my kids to seek out and feed whatever makes them feel fulfilled and inspired. I also hope that they see the beauty in being multicultural and can feel comfortable with that!Â
Â
What's your go-to, feel-good Beyond Yoga outfit?Â
I love my Spacedye Open Back Bra! It has great coverage and can be worn as a top or a bra which I love. The material is also very soft but holds everything together!Â
What do you want to teach your kid(s) about style?
Â
I want them to have fun, plain and simple. I want them to feel content with what they have and to feel like they can mix and match staple items!Â
Â
What do you wear to #moveinbeyond with your kid(s)?
Â
I wear the Spacedye Biker Shorts to #moveinbeyond. I get hot easily with my kids (must be all the multitasking!) and I feel like biker shorts are fun to style and can be dressed up or down!Â
